Report with Coen van Diemen for BIGtruck Magazine

Traveling the Netherlands in style: reportage photography in transport with Coen van Diemen

For my latest photo series as reportage photographer in transport and logistics I went on a day trip with Coen van Diemen – a driver who takes his work seriously, as well as his car. From Den Bosch, he drives for Klijn.nl throughout the Netherlands (and sometimes beyond) with a Ferrari-red Volvo FH16 with 650 hp. An eye-catcher, especially in combination with his sleek KWB trailer in the same striking color.

Coen is 35 years old and grew up with the driver's profession - literally. "My father also sat on the truck. For me it was almost self-evident." He has been working at Klijn.nl for four years, where he supplies natural stone and ceramics to gardeners, wholesalers and private customers on a daily basis.

Transport with care and precision

The working day starts early. Coen parks his combination close to home, which makes his morning start efficient. The first delivery of ceramic tiles goes smoothly – he works with a truck-mounted crane as if he was born with it. “You don’t learn to operate the crane in a few weeks. It takes at least a year,” he explains. “But I keep learning. That’s also what makes it fun.”

If photographer in transport and logistics I see how important precision is in this profession. Not only when unloading, but also when navigating through narrow streets and city centers. Coen remains calm. “Look ahead, take your time. Then you will get there.”

From Limburg to Belgium – variety in logistics

Via Panningen and Heerlen we drive on to Margraten, and then across the border to Belgium for a delivery in Genk. Coen says that he doesn't drive in Belgium very often, but appreciates the variety. "Sometimes you work in the city, then again with a gardener in the countryside. That keeps it interesting."

On the way we get stuck in a traffic jam because of a truck fire. Coen follows the developments closely, but remains calm. “You see all kinds of things on the way. Safety always comes first.”

Proud of truck and work

After the last stop in Eersel, the trailer is empty. Coen is visibly satisfied. “The season is coming to an end, but as long as it stays dry, we have enough work.” We take the time to take a good look at his truck – and take pictures. “I often get asked how I keep it so neat. Just be economical. Wash it regularly, done.”

If reportage photographer specialized in freight transport I notice again and again how important pride and craftsmanship are for drivers like Coen. He works long days, maneuvers with precision and takes good care of his equipment. You see that - and I like to capture that.
